Under the Animal Welfare Act 2008, as amended by the 2011 Act, any dog kept on a chain should have at least 5 metres of length, should get daily exercise and should have adequate shelter as well as food and water.
Of course most chained dogs here in Bulgaria are lucky to ever get off their chain, or have anything more than bread and water.
We are slowly working in villages local to us to persuade dog owners to allow us to install a running line to give dogs a longer length of chain and where we can provide a kennel or other small shelter for the dog. As well as treat for parasites and skin conditions.
To buy all the materials for a 5 metre length of cable and running chain costs around 30 levs (15 Euros).
